NEW TRANSPORTATION IN ATLANTIC COUNTY

English Creek-Tilton Road Shuttle
by Deputy Mayor Richard Harlan

The English Creek-Tilton Road Community Shuttle will provide deviated fixed route shuttle services in Egg Harbor Township and the City of Northfield. The approximate 18 mile route will start on English Creek Avenue at West Jersey Avenue with stops on Delilah Road, Atlantic City Airport and the FAA tech Center along Tilton Road to Mill Road. This shuttle is designed to fill gaps that are not currently covered by public transportation and improve accessibility to work locations and other destinations for people traveling within Atlantic County. The shuttle route will connect to three NJ Transit bus routes (502, 507 & 509) enabling passengers to connect to major employment, shopping and education destinations including Atlantic City, Ocean City, Hamilton Mall and Atlantic Cape Community College.

The service will become operational on Sunday, September 31, 2012 and operate from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm, seven days per week. In compliance with ADA (American Disabilities Act) requirements, the shuttle will deviate ¾ mile off the route to pick up those passengers who cannot reach a bus stop due to a disability. Passengers will be able to flag the vehicle to stop; however flag stops will only be made if the driver deems the stop safe. A fee of $1 will be charged to sustain the shuttle service along with a grant from Atlantic County and a donation from the Pascale Sykes Foundation. The goals of the service are to improve access to employment opportunities and social services for individuals and families in order to improve their quality of life. The shuttle’s schedule is designed to coincide with the schedule of intersecting NJ Transit bus routes to facilitate transfers.

This new service will now allow those of us here in the far western end of Atlantic County to expand our area of employment and interest.

There is a second phase to begin in January 2013, operated by the same organizations, for service to run from Hammonton to Richland along Routes 54 and 40 allowing bus service to the Buena Post Office and Buena Vista Township Municipal Building.
