Spring has sprung, despite one of the warmest February’s on record; we had a threat of the largest snow storm for our area coming in March? I think the lesson here is Mother Nature has a mind of her own and we should enjoy the day no matter the forecast. There are places with climate changes and destruction from that us New Jersey folks seem to just miss – Have to love New Jersey for that!

Once there you will be able to register yourself, guests (family), and provide the correct tee shirt size for all attendees. We will be completing various projects within the Wilder Hines Park and Dr. Martin Luther King Center. This was a great event last year and with our partners Impact Harvest and Comcast, a free catered breakfast and lunch will be provided. Our Community Garden will also get upgraded with raised beds, a bean tee-pee, and flowers to attract pollenating insects. This is a great family event for all ages and it will help foster a great sense of community involvement, pride and volunteerism – These are things that make our community, Buena Vista Township, AWESOME! Registrations for our Walking Club are still open. The MLK Walking Club is promoting the benefits of walking and encourages people of all ages to participate. We will have a periodic meeting to go over the club’s successes by sharing our walking goals and results within the Club. If you are interested in participating in our Walking Club, contact Sandy at the MLK Center and she will “walk” you through the details. All Walking Club members will receive an informational packet of the benefits of walking, a tracking sheet and instructions on the use of an electronic based app to monitor your walking distance and steps.
We are also looking for our students from the Buena Regional School System, to MOM to the MLK Center on Saturday May 13th at 10am. We will provide all the craft materials so you can make MOM a gift and give her a FREE breakfast during our Annual Mother’s Day Breakfast. This is a great way to show you MOM the appreciation and love you have for her. All attending Moms will also receive a special treat from the Dr. Martin Luther King Staff! The Dr. Martin Luther King Center will also host a ZUMBA-THON on April 29th in the Roberta J Corbitt Community Room. Tickets are $25 and are available by contacting Kymbah Dozier at 609-334-3186 or the MLK Center for additional details. Partial proceeds will benefit the Gilda’s Club of South Jersey, Susan G Komen for the Cure and Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Fund.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Center is open daily from 11am-7pm weekdays. You can take the free Route 54/40 shuttle to come to the Center and meet up with your friends, complete homework assignments, or group projects. The MLK Center has free Wi-Fi service and our computer lab is always open for public use. Our Community Center is also a great resource to find out the various local events or programs going on in your area.
Current activities at the MLK Center include: The Seniors of Newtonville Area meet every Wednesday at 10am, MLK Peer leadership group (teenagers) meets weekly every Thursday at 6:30pm, BMA personal fitness training every Monday, Tuesday and Friday by appointment, and ZUMBA classes every Friday night 6pm and Saturday morning at 9am. Story Time with Mrs. Cocoa meets the 2nd and 4th Friday’s during the month and now is also broadcast on Facebook Live on her Facebook page! The African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey is also located within the Dr. Martin Luther King Center. Tours can be arranged by calling 609-350-6662. The current exhibit “A Time for Change” shows the involvement of the civils rights movement in South Jersey. Also on display is “Jet, Black, Brown and Tan” the legacy of John H Johnson and in the gallery the works of Lawrence Faust.
The MLK Center is also available for your next family celebration and a great place to have a birthday party or family reunion. Applications for usage of the facility can be picked up at the MLK Center or at the Clerk’s office in Town hall.
